Frida Kahlo and some 8 tracks

I loaded a new strip to my site (CLICK HERE) of a night listening to music at lisa's house. to verify the legitimacy of their awesomeness, they have a warhol.

him, lila

I uploaded this 18 minute-long gem to the playlist on here. HIM is a sort of post rock band featuring the boundary crushing of Doug Scharin and his friends like Rob Mazurek, Joe Goldring, Christian Dautresme and Griffin Rodriguez. Its superb. and the crackling from the transfer only adds.

Some new SUN RADIOS coming soon too

marbles

wildwood nj is home to the National Marbles Tournament. It's a pretty funny game from the outside looking in, but the competitors actually take this pretty seriously, and admittedly, it is quite difficult.

The tournament has been going on for 85 years. Every year both winners (boys and girls divisions) are crowned at the trophy ceremony and the boy has to kiss the girl on the cheek. I've always been intrigued with this game, namely its old fashioned mindset, but just this year I finally went to shoot it. i scheduled to meet with the winners took some portraits.
i asked the kids, "try not to smile for me. thanks"
the mom replied, "well, they look like they're going to the dentist."
i said, "exactly."
i love people who just dont get it.
anyway, here are some random shots from the day

big ted from colorado who was once was trapped in a tree for two days while being harassed by a bear. the bear ate his nikon.

this is the mom of the winner. i watched her the whole final game and was waiting for her to pull an MJ. She didn't, which was good.
Behind her is a photographer from the local press of atlantic city. He is your typical newspaper photographer who carries around 5 digital cameras on his shoulder and wears a bucket hat and cargo pants and his press pass and tries to "get the shot". so sick (
not).

for the record, spinners arent cool.

the californians idea of rain is nothing like ours. for them, it's "pouring" if its spitting.

long beach, ca

got to go to the other long beach last weekend. i met this lovely couple there.

out and about

been pretty busy the past few weeks with lots of stuff, none of which deserves any complaining. been working a bunch in the ER... saving lives. its fun. and scary and exciting and nerve racking all at the same exact time. luckily i only work two days a week.

the malibu contest was fun, i guess. it was pretty flat, and, in fact, i had a 100% more fun day of surf here in north wildwood than i did all weekend in california.

going blueberry picking tomorrow with one of my favorite lady's in the world, lisa roselli. planning on bringing back 30 lbs of these antioxidant-packed gems.

i have a bunch of pics to post, and still a lot of film to get developed. so i guess this blog deserves a "stay tuned"...

In political theory, the Malibu surfer problem is the prospect of an individual who can work but chooses not to do so, and instead leads a life of self-indulgence funded through some other available means of support. The phrase refers to an imagined resident of Malibu, California who chooses to surf rather than work.

The Malibu surfer problem is usually invoked in relation to at least two different situations:

Persons of considerable personal wealth (especially those who inherited their fortunes rather than earning it) can live off the money produced by their investments without having to do any actual work.
In modern welfare systems, which hand out money and other benefits to unemployed persons. See also free rider problem.
Typically, discussions on the Malibu surfer problem in the context of welfare states are much more common than discussions of this problem in the context of the well-to-do.
Most welfare systems have mechanisms to prevent people from living off welfare benefits alone for a prolonged period. These include proving that recipients are searching for work, or workfare (being forced to do some form of work to be paid the money).
In general, the political Right tends to emphasize the Malibu surfer problem and use it as an argument for reducing or even abolishing welfare - typically for the purposes of reducing taxes. The political Left may counter this argument in a variety of ways:
Some argue that it is better to suffer from the Malibu surfer problem than to let people starve. Individuals who receive no help may end up as homeless persons or criminals, creating far more of a social burden. Providing every citizen with income may give them more of a stake in society and thus reduce crime and vagrancy.
Others argue that welfare for the unemployed is an inherent part of the human right to life, and that abolishing it would be immoral.
Those who have to work over 30 hours per week to pay for college can be worse students because they lack adequate time for their studies.
In addition, a substantial proportion of homeless persons are mentally ill, and often practically unemployable. A similar argument may apply for alcoholism and drug addiction, because it could produce social and medical effects very similar to those of mental illness.
Yet others argue that the effects of the Malibu surfer problem are in any case negligible, since most people would rather have a well-paying job than live just on the edge of poverty, which is often the case for recipients of welfare benefits.
A "Malibu surfer" living from welfare can consume only very little, which means he uses less of the limited natural resources, whereas richer people might lead a lifestyle that contradicts ecological sustainability.
Even people who do not work are still contributing to the economy by spending money, thus driving up demand for goods and services. This may create employment for others.

happy birthday janet

Today i finally finished up the story on roses. I took my old artist friend Janet Brown over to the lighthouse gardens for some early morning light. it was her birthday a few days ago.. she just turned 90. as i have posted before, she lives in the oldest house here on wildwood island.. dating back to 1860's. the house is amazing inside and out. she paints (oils), draws with charcoal, sculpts (small and life-sized), writes, sings, gardens... everything. she is awesome and super funny. she just finished a statue made out of 694 pins, to be exact. i want to buy it from her.
she just had a birthday party which President Bush Sr and the dean of Princeton attended. I love janet.
